Quick Tips: Pinholes in Glaze

What are pinholes?

Pinholes in pottery glaze are small holes penetrating the glaze surface. They can be caused by trapped gases during firing, dust particles, or rough clay surfaces, and can be prevented by ensuring a smooth, dust-free surface and proper glaze application.

The best way to prevent them is to always wash or dust off bisque-ware before glazing!

All Kilns Firing Today!

There was a lot to catch up on after my day off, but I now have all three kilns loaded and firing today. So, they will be unloaded Thursday or Friday. All bisque-ware that was dry enough to fire is in the kiln. I didn't have room for all of the glaze-ware, but most of what was on the shelves did get in. Whatever didn't make it today will definitely go in on Friday.

I want to apologize for the miscommunication about firing last week. I posted here that I had fired a bisque and glaze load last week, but it turns out I didn't actually start the bisque kiln 😅 Luckily, Rebecca started it on Thursday and it was unloaded yesterday by Noah.

Kiln Firing Update and More...

Hello Potters! I fired kilns on Friday and TODAY. So, I unloaded what was fired Friday and and everything else that was on the shelves in the kiln room (both bisque and glaze) is currently in the kilns being fired. At the very latest, they will be unloaded on Friday. But, I anticipate Rebecca will get to it on Thursday for her class.

Also, I will be out of town on Friday. Noah will be coving Studio+ again (thanks, Noah!). That means I will not be firing on Friday. So the next firing after today will be next Tuesday 2/18 and unloaded later next week.

Please email me if ever have any questions!

I fired another glaze and bisque load today! Almost everything on the shelves made it in. It will be out Friday if not unloaded by an instructor before I get to it.

Reminder to Clean Your Bottoms!

This is your friendly reminder to clean all the glaze off the bottom of your pots. That includes ALL glaze left on wax. As the wax melts, the glaze will flake off onto kiln shelves or surrounding pieces.

Here are some examples of unclean bottoms. So, be sure to appropriately clean your bottoms folks 😉
