Hamilton, Ohio - People enjoy nostalgia.
There's a reason Randy Turner published several books and lectures nationally on The Andy Griffith Show.
During his Celebrating Self appearance - Classic TV - January 8 at the Fitton Center, Turner said people see their favorite old shows and remember a simpler time. A better time. But was it?
"Probably not if you were a woman who wanted her own credit card," Turner said. "Or were black. Or gay. But the best of these shows are evergreen, and that's why we're still talking about them. The original Andy Griffith show has been off the air since 1968, but here we are."
More than just Andy, Turner touched on a variety of programs from the 1950s and '60s, pointing out some things we'd never see on television today, including Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble smoking Winston cigarettes.
