Call to Artists for Hamilton Current

Hamilton, Ohio – The Fitton Center for Creative Arts seeks entries for the 52nd Hamilton Current: Hamilton’s Area Art Competition until Sunday, March 16. This all-media juried show is open to adult visual artists residing within 60 miles of Hamilton with no limits on theme, content or style.

“Because Hamilton Current has been around for so long, many participating artists and viewers look forward to each biennial, but it continues to draw in new artists with every version,” said Fitton Center Director of Exhibitions Cathy Mayhugh.

“It’s one of the Fitton Center’s most popular exhibitions because it offers something for everyone and so much inspiring art for creatives to view.  We love that it brings area artists to Hamilton to celebrate each other and enjoy the galleries.”

An entry free of $35 allows artists to submit up to three original works created in the last five years; the Hamilton Current awards a total of $1,000 in cash prizes for top entries as selected and judged by professional artists.

The Fitton Center invites two different art professionals to make selections and determine awards for each biennial Hamilton Current competition. New jurors each cycle keeps the perspective fresh and brings varied backgrounds to the process.

Richard W. James (Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Miami University in Oxford) and Emily Versoza (Gallery Manager at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center in Cincinnati) serve as the 52nd Hamilton Current judges.

Mayhugh said the Hamilton Current exhibition is a unique opportunity for area artists on several fronts.

“Juried exhibitions often carry limits on a conceptual theme or are structured around a certain artistic medium,” she said. “Hamilton Current is unique in that it is completely open to theme, content, form and style. Any adult artist working with any material or subject matter can apply. The diversity of art creates an exciting show.

“A regular curated exhibition usually requires an artist to present a whole series of works around a certain concept. Requiring only a piece or two per artist, a juried show is a way for artists to test a new direction or current passion. Or for emerging artists to start to share their work and get exposure.”

Regardless of experience level, Mayhugh anticipates a large breadth and depth of work from regional artists.

“We typically receive more than 200 entries by nearly 100 artists,” she said. “I’m hoping for a similar response this year.”

Artists may make their submissions for the competition online right here. Early entries are encouraged.

Fitton Center gallery opening celebrations are always FREE and open to the public. More than 300 people typically attend and featured artists connect with the community about their work. The 52nd Hamilton Current opening is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday April 26, in conjunction with Fitton Showstoppers performance Son Del Caribe.

The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
