Celebrating the Great Miami

(Hamilton, OH) - When Mary Lynn Lodor moved to the area from upstate New York nearly 30 years ago, she took a pottery class at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts.

In a full-circle moment, the General Manager of the Miami Conservancy District brought the ceramic bowl she made in that class with her when she spoke at the Fitton Center's Celebrating Self luncheon March 5.

Lodor talked about the history of the district. Specifically how it was formed in the wake of the deadly 1913 Great Miami River flood and has been working ever since to prevent similar tragedies. And - for the record - working successfully. There hasn't been another flood disaster since the district took over management of the river. Its dams and land for flood-water runoff have been effective in saving the region millions of dollars in property damages. Lodor and the district took some heat for the 2024 assessment to raise funds for infrastructure upkeep, but currently they are working with local and state agencies for a more equitable solution. The final Celebrating Self luncheon of the 2024-2025 season is Wednesday, April 2, as we take a Journey to the Center of the Earth. Join history teacher Chris Maraschiello for a look at the weird science - and weirder history - of 19th century Hamiltonian John Symmes Jr., who inspired the nearby Hollow Earth Monument. Meantime, enjoy a few more photos from the March 5 luncheon in the photo gallery below.
