Chalk One Up

Updated: Aug 10, 2023

Hamilton, Ohio – They meant to do that.

No, really. They did.

Promise.

What some thought was a mistake, actually was a chance to start a conversation. A clever ruse disguised as a spelling error.

Behold, the chalk wall at ArtSpace Hamilton Lofts and Resident Gallery (222 High Street, Hamilton, Ohio 45011). A team of artists including Cassandra Murphy, Amina Mitchell, Myka Whitis-Gunn, RayLyn Whitis-Gunn, Phoenix O'Neil and Leila Lo arrived early Saturday, August 5, to beat the heat and craft a giant, colorful invitation to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts’ 2023-2024 Season Launch – Paint the Town Red – scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, August 18.

Only they spelled “launch” L-A-N-C-H. No U.

Gotcha!

“That was the point,” said Arnita Gunn, development manager at the Fitton Center. “All that’s missing at Season Launch is you. You are what we are missing. Come out so we don’t miss you on the 18th. You don’t want to miss this event. It’s a huge, fun, FREE party for the entire community.

“We’re so grateful to ArtSpace for letting us shout it out to the whole city on the side of their building. The arts bring people together and that’s what we’re doing with Paint the Town Red.”

The phrase has been part of the lexicon for more than a century; it means to have a raucous, rollicking good time. This Fitton Center open house is a fantastic place to do just that.

Paint the Town Red features live music by The Other Band on the Riverview Terrace, performances by resident companies like The Golden Tappers and Performing Arts Inc. in the Fitton Family Theater, a gallery-opening celebration for the dual Human Nature/Class Act art exhibition, live art demonstrations in the painting, pottery and mosaic studios, an interactive fabric-art installation – the Pergola Pop-up – along Monument Avenue and more. Plus a cash bar with beer, wine, water, soda, spirits and a signature cocktail, with food by Two Women in a Kitchen.

Join us. All are welcome.

The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
