While the winning mural design for the 1,800 square-foot mural at the Hamilton Living Water Ministry building (510 South 8th Street) won’t be announced until March, StreetSpark opens applications for supporting artists starting Monday, February 17.
“We love this opportunity to create public art that helps showcase a local non-profit that is working daily to create connection and opportunity for its nearby community,” said StreetSpark program manager Jennifer Acus-Smith. “Bringing beauty and inspiration to a space can go a long way to boost neighborhood pride.”
Applications remain open through Sunday, March 16. Interviews follow in March and April. The selected artist team begins painting in June; supporting artists earn $20 an hour for their work.
Applicants must be 18 or older and exhibit strong painting ability, including - but not limited to - blending, rendering images, detail painting and color mixing. They also must be punctual, team-oriented, positive and self-directed, as well comfortable working on ladders and/or scaffolding.
StreetSpark purchases and provides all supplies, materials and equipment in collaboration with the lead artist. Estimated length of project is three to four weeks, with typical working hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Applicants should supply a current resume, examples of their artwork (painting or mural examples in a JPEG format) and at least one professional letter of reference supporting their mural/painting experience, work ethic, reliability, etc.
Additional details and the application form are available online right here.
Originated in 2016 as a partnership between the Fitton Center for Creative Arts and the City of Hamilton, 2025 marks StreetSpark’s 10th year transforming public spaces through murals. Funding for the project comes from the City of Hamilton and the Ohio Arts Council.
Since its inception, Street Spark artists have designed and painted 20 murals and 17 utility boxes. The newest is 2024’s Tourism Series: Hamilton, designed and painted by Cincinnati- and Louisville-based art collective Often Seen Rarely Spoken.
The 3,750-square-foot design along the Great Miami River across from Spooky Nook on the Dave Belew Trail is the second-largest in program history.
The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is located at 101 S. Monument Avenue on the Riverfront in downtown Hamilton, Ohio.
